Surfing in Staten Island: Everything You Need To Know

Staten Island, or New York, isn't known for its surfing escapades. So, it comes as a surprise to most people when there are surfing spots throughout the island. As mentioned, Staten Island is not a highly popular surfing destination. Still, it has some gorgeous beaches with seasons and incredible waves that are perfect for a quick ride along the waves.

Surfing Tips In Staten Island

Staten Island may not be everyone's top surfing spot, but you shouldn't cut it off at first glance because it's got more than meets the eye.

Whenever surfing comes to mind, people automatically think about tropical paradises with warm climates and pristine beaches like Hawaii. But many overlook the breathtaking difference of surfing near the big city. Staten Island allows surfers to surf with a unique view of the State of New York.

But before you get into surfing, here are a couple of tips you need to know before grabbing your surfboard:

  • Check The Weather - New York is one of the places in the world where they experience four climate seasons. It's a delight to surf during Spring and Summer when the weather's more agreeable with the Bays, but be ready for the huge crowds piling up on the beach for a tan or a swim. Also, beware of several chances of rainfall and possibly the occasional storms. It's best to check the weather for the day before heading out to be on the safer side.
  • Prepare Your Equipment - With the unpredictability of the weather, it's best always to have your surfing gear and supplies ready when the weather, wind, and waters align for a perfect day on your surfboard. Ensure you invest in the proper cold water wetsuit, board, and such to accommodate the excellent and harsh conditions.
  • Check The Water Temperature - Since Staten Island is not tropical, it is vital to check the water temperature before diving in. As much as cold water can have its health benefits, a freezing temperature can have severe repercussions. The water can go as low as 30°F during the colder seasons.
  • Read The Waves - Surfers understand the importance of reading the waves, especially in places like Staten Island, where the winds and weather are uncertain. Always keep an eye out on the horizontal line, and as soon as you see a stable set coming out, it's the skyline together with the wave's angle, and identify its highest point before paddling over to it. This fundamental skill can make or break your session.
  • Stretch Before Paddling Towards The Water - Surfing is a strenuous sport; it takes so much of the body's energy and strength to keep going. It is important to realize that stretching is essential in surfing because it loosens up the muscles and relaxes them afterward.

There are more tips you should know when it comes to surfing on Staten Island, some of which are simple, such as expecting big crowds from locals who need to unwind from the pressures of the city, keeping your valuables safe, and having a buddy system, among others.

The Fantastic Beaches In Staten Island

Staten Island has several beaches along different Bays located around the island. New York is one of the few East Coast states with gorgeous beaches despite having four seasons in a year. Plus, on some beaches, you can see the majestic clear waters and some modern skyscrapers.

Here are the top beaches around Staten Island:

1. South Beach

First is South Beach, home to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk. It is one of the top beaches in Staten Island and is filled with relaxing and fun-filled adventures. Located on the East Shore, South Beach is a popular place to hang out because of the refreshing atmosphere, and surfers find challenging yet friendly waves. It has a reputation for long intervals and clean lineups, creating a fantastic experience for all surfers.

2. Midland Beach

Midland Beach is located alongside South Beach. It is one of the best-known beaches throughout Staten Island. It is famous for its various recreational activities and freshening beachside vibes that lure in locals and tourists. Unlike South Beach, Midland is relatively quieter between the two, making it an ideal place to enjoy the waves with fewer people.

3. Wolfe's Pond Beach

Wolfe's Pond Beach is in the Great Kills. It is notable for being a "natural beach" because of its rocky scenery, where you get the perfect view of the water and skyline. It is a small, secluded place perfect for some alone time with the waves.

4. Cedar Grove Beach

Cedar Grove Beach is the city's most recent beach. It was formerly a shoreside bungalow colony that became a new and calming place to unwind. It offers a view of the West Bank Lighthouse and a quiet place to escape the city's bustling streets.

Conclusion

There's so much to explore in Staten Island in terms of surfing, and its uniqueness compared to other popular surfing sites is something worth checking out. It's an underrated gem because there's surfing potential within the area, but it should also be given the proper care and treatment to live up to it.
